Freya Closs

Freya has recently graduated from Bath Spa University where she studied Creative Arts, specialising in fine art and textiles. Working primarily with etching, photography and collage she combines and manipulates all three to create striking, haunting images on paper and cloth.

"I use photography, personal and found, as a source of research; it is my primary means of enquiry. I work in printmaking using the traditional techniques and materials of etching. Recently, I've taken a more modern approach exploring photo etching. I use print to develop my images beyond the limitations of photography. I strive to make images personal through the manipulation of surface through colour, light, perspective and texture, echoing the traditional methods used in painting.

The female form is my main point of interest and my current aim is to look at the form as a subject, also experimenting with the viewer's response. I am interested in the theory of the gaze that is contained in the subject of visual culture, however my work is mainly concerned with the female gaze. My work continues to be linked with gender and the ideals of beauty."
