Catherine
Porter has worked in the book world for over twenty years, five years for the
distinguished firm of J. Clarke-Hall, in the long-vanished newspaper world of
Fleet Street, becoming a director of the firm.
In 1986 she entered the auction house Sotheby's specialising in children's books,
illustrated books and the original artwork for these visual books. Becoming
a deputy director she left their full-time employ to follow wider interests
but remains a senior consultant with responsibility for the specialised auctions
of children's and illustrated books and original artwork. As well as running
the Catherine Porter Gallery with the aim of helping to promote young artists
and of bringing affordable art into people's homes she also writes books and
advises collectors.
